Juli

Juli is an urban planner with a passion for the outdoors. With a background in History and Geography and a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning focusing on sustainability, she understands the deep connection between built and natural environments.

Her love for the outdoors was fostered early on by her parents, spending school breaks camping, biking, and whitewater kayaking in the Southeast. As she grew older, caving became her favorite adventure—blending both exploration and challenge.

In 2021, she joined REI as an outdoor guide, teaching classes in biking, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (including SUP yoga), mountain biking, and backpacking. She loves sharing her enthusiasm for outdoor experiences, and helping others build confidence and skills in nature.

A certified Wilderness First Responder and CPR-certified, she is committed to making the outdoors safe and accessible for everyone. She strives to ensure people of all backgrounds can enjoy and connect with nature, whether through planning sustainable communities or guiding outdoor adventures.

Sarah started geeking out about the outdoors when she was a kid catching crawdads in the creek behind her house (definitely a sewage runoff) . As an adult she moved to NYC to pursue acting where you’re encouraged to be clean and polite and thin which caused loads of anxiety and depression. So Sarah started hiking. Then she started backpacking. And though it took DAYS for her to poop the first time she went backpacking and she was too afraid of being eaten to fall asleep… she fell in love.

Since then, Sarah has taken groups of women backpacking in the Rocky Mountains, Guided trips and taught outdoor skills (Beginner Backpacking, Wilderness Survival, Beginner Kayaking) for REI. Sarah is also a Senior Program Leader and the Program Coordinator for No Barriers in Colorado– a non-profit focused on getting people with barriers in their lives outdoors. This organization has special meaning for Sarah as she was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome in 2019 and suffers from chronic pain and joints dislocating/subluxating regularly– a diagnosis that was accompanied with warnings of physical limitations (limitations we fight with daily).

Sarah is an award winning guide and instructor and her dual life in the tv and film industry ensures that her programs are endlessly entertaining… just like her therapy sessions! Coming to the outdoor industry later in life (like an 18th century old maid) gives her an abundance of love and respect for outdoor newbies! The outdoors is for EVERYONE.

“Spending time outdoors has healed so much of my sense of self worth. It’s given me the ability to be present and patient with myself when I never could do that before and I believe everyone deserves a chance to feel that way”
